To DIY or Not: Three Garage Door Problems That Should Be Handled By Professionals

If you are like most homeowners, you probably like to tackle some projects yourself to save time and money. While there are a lot of projects that can easily be done without the help of a professional, not all projects fall under that scope. If you are thinking about tackling a DIY garage repair, make sure it isn't any of these three projects:

1. Broken Springs

After several years of daily use, it is inevitable that your garage door springs become non-functional. Daily use, temperature fluctuations, and general wear can easily take its toll on the springs. While it might seem like a good project to tackle yourself, it isn't.

The springs are what keep the door moving properly. They also keep the door from suddenly falling when in the open position. If the springs are worn out, they aren't working properly and that can lead to danger. Additionally, you might cause further problems if you don't install the new springs correctly. So if the springs are broken or worn, do not attempt to remedy the problem without the help of a professional.

2. Doors That Aren't on the Track

Another thing that you shouldn't attempt to fix yourself is a door that is no longer on its track. If you have a newer door, chances are good that it has a built-in sensor to detect whether something—or someone—is under it. However, it might not work properly if the door isn't on the track and this can be seriously dangerous. Damaged cables might also be the culprit and this can be dangerous as well, as the door might suddenly fall. So if the door doesn't open or close properly anymore, contact a professional for help. It's better to be safe than sorry.

3. Worn Rollers

Finally, you might want to skip fixing garage door rollers yourself. When the garage door begins to jerk when opening or closing, it's probably due to worn out rollers. While it might seem like an easy fix, it is often harder than you imagine. Although it isn't as dangerous as off-track doors or broken springs, the rollers are often complicated pieces of equipment. Deteriorated rollers can be very difficult to disassemble, even if it looks easy. Additionally, if assembled or installed wrong it can cause serious problems.

While some garage door problems can easily be tackled without the help of a professional garage door contractor, not all projects are DIY friendly. If your garage door is suffering from any of these issues, contact a garage door repair professional for help. Not only will it save you time, money, and frustration, it will also ensure the safety of you and your family.
